Unexpected Kitchen Colors, and Why They Work
Most color decisions in a kitchen fall within a fairly narrow range. White. Gray. Sage green. Light blue. These are colors that are easy to imagine in a space, and precisely for that reason, they appear again and again.
Outside that range, there is another palette. Terracottas, soft yellows, mineral pinks, olive greens, or blues that are difficult to classify. Colors that might seem too specific when viewed in a sample and completely natural when they appear in the right space.
An unexpected color works when there is a reason for it to be there. It can pick up a shade from the floor, continue the warmth of a wood, contrast with a stone, or respond to the light in the room. When that relationship exists, the color no longer feels like the protagonist of the kitchen. It begins to become a part of it.
